Isobella Nashville, TN 9/24/2009 5:07:39 PM DON"T get a dog just because a movie came out featuring a certain breed! Do extensive research and ,if possible ,meet people with the breed you're interested in and discuss what it's like living with that kind of dog. There isn't a breed that's for everyone, you have to research what is right for you. I've seen so many dogs wind up in shelters because of impulse buying or adopting and then being abandoned or brought back because ''It got too big, It barks too much, It doesn't get along with my kids or cats or other dogs, It has too much energy, It's too protective,'' or another problem that is not really a problem but a breed trait. Please be responsible and do your research!!!
Jenny New Oxford, PA 10/8/2008 4:32:07 AM Genete from Santa Maria, CA, makes a good point! Words of Wisdom for everyone to follow! Every time a movie or TV show like this comes out, we have a surge of the featured breed flowing into shelters nation-wide. The Jack Russells because of Frazier, the Dalmations because of 101 Dalmations! Thank heaven for the wonderful folks in the breed rescues for helping out with these situations!
Cirdan Grey Havens, ME 10/6/2008 10:49:04 PM Chihuahuas are lovely and if you are able to care for one... do so! If not, don't ruin a perfectly good dog.
Genete Santa Maria, CA 10/6/2008 9:21:07 PM Every time we have a movie like this, this creates a mass want of the featured breed. With ALL the dogs we have out in shelters, kennels, humane societys, & with all the animals left behind because of foreclosures, WHY does anyone need to make a rush out to get a breed without first considering the animals that ALREADY need help. Please folks think of this first!!
Galadriel Lothlorien, ME 10/6/2008 7:30:30 PM This is a good warning. People will probably not heed it though. And I think I'll take a dozen.
Anna Maple Grove, MN 10/6/2008 6:18:46 PM I really appreciate the article! Too many people get a dog without considering how much work and time they need and that it is a lifelong commitment. I hope people will listen to this warning! Too many dogs go to a shelter because people did not carefully consider whether they were ready for a dog or not. It's not fair to the dog at all! Thanks again.
Caitlin Toronto, ON 10/6/2008 2:56:43 PM Thanks for warning potential dog-buyers of this! It's never a good idea to buy a dog just because they look 'smart' or 'cute' on TV. TV doesn't give the behind-the-scenes chaos (and fun!) of walks, play time, training, socialization, etc of owning any breed. Please do your research!
Amanda NY, CA 10/6/2008 2:22:00 PM That is so sad that people just go out and buy a chihuahua because they think they are cute. I played with one once and they are just sooooo delicate and fragile!
Pat St Louis, MO 10/6/2008 1:25:58 PM Great warning! As a border collie owner, I am apprehensive about how BCs look good on the Hollywood screen and then folks go out and get one with no idea of what they're in for. Research the breed first! No matter how cute they were in the movie, no matter how stunning their looks, these are real living beings with behavior you may not desire.
Patty Youngstown, OH 10/6/2008 1:21:54 PM I sure hope that the movie doesn't do what the 101 Dalmations move did a few years ago.
mason arrat, VA 10/6/2008 12:17:16 PM i love chihuahuas and it's sad that so many people would run out and buy one just because they look cute in the movie.. I hope the chihuahuas end up in good homes and not unfortunate situations
bertha SAN DIEGO, CA 10/6/2008 10:57:51 AM is gonna happen the same with as the dalmatian! when the 101 dalmatian movie came out! people be carefull!!
Della Madison Heights, VA 10/6/2008 9:37:40 AM This is a great reminder. I hope you spread the word else where also.
Patty La Mirada, CA 10/6/2008 7:39:31 AM I got my dalmatian from someone who couldn't keep her. They said she was too hyper. The Disney flik 101 Dalmatians prompted their adoption. People really should think about what they're getting themselves into.
Missy Jacksonville, FL 10/6/2008 6:42:26 AM How true this is. I wish everyone would research a breed and learn about raising a dog before making such an important decision.
Christy Covina, CA 10/6/2008 4:15:51 AM Great story. Much like having a child getting a dog is something that shooul be carefully decided upon. There are groomings, vet bills, feeding, excercise ect. to make sure your dog is well taken care of.
