After ruling out the possible causes of epilepsy mentioned by Dr.Messonnier, I have found that the symptoms are a manisfestation of hypersensitivity, an allergy which can be prevented via treating the immune system (immunotherapy). The treatment protocol is outlined in my chapter "Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine prevents any re-occurences. Wendell O. Belfield, D.V.M.

To Steve, Highland Park, IL: How much Milk Thistle do you give to your dog and in what form? I have a 4 yr old small German Shepherd mix who has had very mild seizures for the last 2 yrs. that I know of. (She was a rescue at about 2 yrs.) She is on phenobarbital, but I didn't know about the possible liver damage.

My dog just started phenobarbital on Friday and woke us up this morning at 3am, she had diarrhea. She had it all day but has been drinking, eating and acting normal otherwise. Did this medacation cause diarrhea in anyone else's dog in the begining?

i like to put my dog in his crate that he sleeps in.it has 2 pillows in it so he can be comfortable & i know he wont hurt his self while having the seizure.i also put him in when i leave with a sound machine playing for soothing.

Our 9 year old golden has had epilepsy since she was 6 and although on phenyl continues to have seizures every three to four weeks- to minimize liver damage caused by the medication we have successfully controlled her liver function by giving her a daily dose of milk thistle- her epilepsy aside, she is probably the healthiest, active dog we have ever owned-

My six year old German Shepherd Lexi was the firt dog to be diagnosed with " exersize induced " epilepsy. At first they thought it was her heart since it always happened after vigerous play or running. After several tests and heart halter monitoring, and a video of her episodes it was diagnosed as exersize induced epilepsy. The vet was stunned and never came across any thing like it. She has been on Phenobarbital since she was 18 months old and is doing great! Thanks to her meds she lives a normal healthy life!

MY 4 YEAR OLD BORDER COLLIE HAS BEEN HAVING SEIZURES SINCE RIGHT BEFORE HE TURNED 2. HE IS CURRENTLY ON PHENOBARB & POTASSIUM BROMIDE BOTH TWICE /DAY. HE CONTINUES TO HAVE NUMEROUS SEIZURES AT A TIME. HE MAY GO FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS WITHOUT ANY & THEN... ANY OTHER IDEAS.

FYI to owners of newly diagnosed pets. My 14 yr. old yorkie, Haley was diagnosed with juvenile canine epilepsy at age 5. She takes two doses a day of a phenobarb compound and has done well for the last 9 years. Her blood is tested twice a year to check for liver function and pheno levels. Your article has very reassuring advise. At the time of grand mal seizing, I usually dim lights, hold her close and pet her calmly and speak to her softly. This does lessen the seizure time.

Our 15yr old dog,Chloe, had the first of 8
seizures
3 wks ago. It's heartbreaking to watch. Her head flops around & her limbs go stiff. I hold her tell her I'm there while she's yelping like she's in pain (or maybe scared). Bloodwork shows elevated alkaline phosphatase (700),milk thistle recommended

For anyone with a dog that has seizures please be aware on how long the seizure lasts. If it lasts longet than usual do not wait and take your dog to the vet. We lost our 2 year old Dalmatian after he had a seizure and never came out of it. We never heard of a dog dieing from a seizure but it can happen. This is not to frighten anyone - i know many dogs with epilepsy who live a very long lives but i wouldnt want what happened to us happen to any other dog lover out there!

Excellent article, but it didn't cover tail-chasing siezures like my Border Collie,Lab mix
has.
She is on Phenobarbital which helps considerably, but occasionally she still has one. Any comments?

Last night my chow-chow had a grand mal seizure. He has had two in his 10 yrs of life. The first one we think happened when my son and his wife separated and he left us with Chewbaca (3 yrs old). I belive with all my heart that Chewbaca was aware that his master was about to abandon
him.

7 years later, our son is visiting but not home at the time and last night Chewbaca had another grand mal seizure. Your article describes it to a "T". I can't get out of my head watching him and not being able to help him. You forgot to mention that it takes usually about 15 minutes for them to come out of it (hopefully). His head and upper body was swaying uncontrollably as I just put my hands on both sides of him giving him support until his muscles would relax enough to allow him to lie down. Thank you for your article, I did everything I could to make sure he didn't hurt himself further with the writhing flip flopping and swaying. FYI, he is fine now. We took him to our favorite vet for a good going through and everyting is fine, heart, and other areas. The vet did give him a "cocktail shot, mixed with Antibotic, steroids and vitamins. He should be feeling like a million bucks now (for a few days)
