Emily Cullman, AL 11/21/2008 11:45:45 PM I really wondered why my dog was sick with diarrhea when I first got him! I learned my lesson not to buy my pets from pet stores. That is so sad what they do to those animals.
A Elmwood Park, NJ 11/21/2008 10:22:22 PM That is horrible. I will probably never buy a puppy from a petstore. I hate seeing them in those small cages with nothing to do. Breeding puppies then giving them to petstores in small cages is like slavery. We got our Golden from a breeder. The puppies lived with thier mother and a couple dairy cows at a farm. They were in great health, and were very happy. They were all alert and active and the mother was very friendly.
Karen Standish, ME 11/21/2008 8:37:53 PM It is important to do your research, most pet stores get dogs from puppy mills. Some breeders are also running puppy mills. I know someone who bought a puppy from a breeder then found out her puppy mill was 5 miles from where she sold the puppy. They were turned in. She felt bad because she thought she was doing the right thing! I always adopt dogs from shelters! It saves lives!!
S 3 Oaks, MI 11/21/2008 3:38:22 PM Although I'm not familiar with this store, I do believe that ANY store that sells animals must do a complete investigation of ANYWHERE they buy animals from!!
bertha SAN DIEGO, CA 11/21/2008 3:33:12 PM I saw the news yesterday and it was pretyy upset so thanks for keeping an eye on that specially during this time of the year.
Ariel St.Louis, MO 11/21/2008 10:47:23 AM HSUS is not showing enough proof for my test. HSUS is animal rights, not animal welfare. They are not giving an actual number. "Mass breeding" is an opinon. USDA inspects these breeders. THese "Puppy-millers" are generally not as bad as you think. GO to usabreeders.com. THese people are more educated than you'd think.
Donna Limington, ME 11/21/2008 9:57:46 AM We have since learned not to go and buy a puppy from a store like we would a pair of shoes.
Della Madison Heights, VA 11/21/2008 9:45:53 AM Every thing in that store is over priced. This is a greater reason not to shop there.
A~ Indianapolis, IN 11/21/2008 7:52:15 AM I used to work for a store that sold puppies. We obtained them from the same "breeders" that Petland did. I interviewed at Petland in the past, and asked about which kennels, they were the same. The claim about the "best in the business" is somewhat true. Compared to other mills, these aren't the worst there are. Still no excuse for contributing to these operations still functioning. On the days that new "orders" arrived, a large van, or Uhaul type truck would arrive. We would go out to the truck to retrieve the pups the store had ordered. The truck was a disgrace. Kennels stacked to the ceiling with as many dogs crammed into them as possible. Feces and urine soaked, these poor animals had to endure extremely long trips like this. After getting the ones we took cleaned up they would be looked over. Most were sick and needed care. This is what comes into pet stores. I now work at a veterinary hospital. We see puppies that people have recently bought from a Pet store. They always come in sick with either upper respiratory infections (kennel cough mainly) and intestinal parasites. I am sad that I ever worked in an industry that sold dogs. No matter what the store workers tell you, they come from mills. They train the employees with a little speech about "reputable breeders".
bobby mcgrath supersecretville, AS 11/21/2008 7:24:24 AM Whatever fickle reason you have for hating the humane society they do a whole lot more good then harm. And they are probably completely right in their calling out of petland practices. Puppy Mills exist, they are disgusting, and large pet retailers keep up their supply and demand during the holiday season by lowering their "standards" and accepting this practice. If you don't believe this is happening you are sheltered and probably want to lessen your own guilt.
Kyo hellskitchen, FL 11/21/2008 5:44:42 AM Or the same humane society that wants to exterminate two of the kindest dogs i have had the pleasure of meeting, simply because they are old pitts and 'unadoptable' and they cannot 'afford' to keep them? Thankfully THOSE dogs are coming home with ME tomorrow.
john pontiac, IL 11/21/2008 4:00:42 AM Is this the same "Humane Society" that refuses certain breeds, including Huskies, as "undesirable"? THAT Humane Society?
