I don't think their popularity will pick up much because they are so rare most people and crappy breeders won't be able to afford them.

It's important to remember that it's best for both the family AND the dog that they choose if they find the right match so that the dog finds a permanent home. Who cares how long it takes?

Geez, they should just get a "hypoallergenic" poodle mix on the redlist at their local shelter. Honestly, I'm sure some perfect dogs for them have already been destroyed due to their overly-long search. I mean, don't get me wrong... I love Portugese Water Dogs. But, there's so many other dogs besides that breed that really need the Obama family right now.
