How can Holistic be put on some dog food then if it isn't actually a dietary attribute (or totally based on dietary) - what would it mean?

Great information! Now, if dog food could use a system like NuVal -- it would make decisions so much easier when choosing which brand to buy!

Great topic!! I, like Ruth, feed a combination of high quality dog kibble mixed w/my own recipe. Riley my Malteese goes crazy for it. I also use the homemade food as a training treat. He'll do anything I ask, anywhere I ask(ie-parks and other public areas where there are many distractions).

I also feed a combination of home made and commercial food. The Minature pincher has responded quite well, he has more energy and does not eat as much as when on commercial food only. The schipperkee has also gotten improved energy and sleeps better at night. I get the recipes from a holistc dog food book I would recommend purchasing one there are several availble at the book stores.

I feed a combination of raw, with homemade, along with suppliments to ensure proper nutrition for a dog that has problems processing kibble.

Every dog is different and mine now has to have a supplement of wet food in with her dry. I believe that as long as we are making sure that what we are feeding our dogs is nutritious that they will be better off in the long run.

This just re-enforces that every dog is unique and that we need to feed what best suits our particular dog and lifestyle.

I've been cooking for my eight dogs several years now and they are all very healthy. Five of my dogs are between eight to eleven years old. I have modified the diet over the years and now that I recently added blueberries I refer to it as their super blue food. I make a large pot of food once a week and add just a little dry food to it.

I now feed food from a company where I know the owners and formulator of the products. All of the products are shipped directly to me. This gives me peace of mind. I know that if anything should ever be questionable with the ingredients, I will be informed directly so that I can take action, rather than find out about it through news channels.

When my husky/lab reached age 13, she lost her appetite. Home cooked meals was all I could get her to eat. She continued to lose weight. I think it was because meat and rice did not have the required vitamins, minerals, and maybe other things missing as well. I wish I would have found advice that would have helped her appetite improve.
