Wal-Mart stores recently pulled dog treats produced in China from store shelves after customers complained their dogs were becoming ill after eating the products.

Wal-Mart pulled all Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co., and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading from all of their stores on July 26, 2007. In addition, a computerized block was put on the products so store employees could not mistakenly sell the items.

Wal-Mart issued a statement saying, “We will continue to work with the supplier to assure that the highest safety standards are met … More importantly, our thoughts are with anyone whose pet may have become ill after consuming this product.”

Consumers may return any of the dog treats to the store for a refund, or call (800) WAL-MART for questions.

Wal-Mart did not immediately return calls requesting the number and nature of complaints received.

At this time, the FDA has not issued a recall of the dog treat products. “The FDA is aware of complaints from consumers about some chicken jerky pet food products,” says Laura Alvey, an FDA spokeswoman. “We are actively investigating the matter and conducting testing. To date, our own testing has not found any contaminant in the products, however, testing is ongoing.”
