Georgia is on Willie Nelson’s mind.
The country singer has filmed a TV ad that supports an anti-dogfighting bill that’s being considered in the Georgia State Legislature. If passed, the bill would make it a felony for anyone to sell, trade, or transport dogs for the purpose of dogfighting.
In the ad, Nelson looks into the camera while “Georgia on My Mind” plays in the background.
“Dogfighting is against the law in Georgia, but the laws are so weak, the beautiful state of Georgia has become a haven for dogfighters from around the country,” he says in the ad.
The bill, which was authored by Sen. Chip Rogers, has passed the state Senate and will be heard before a House committee in January.
Rogers plans to get Nelson’s public service announcement, which was paid for by Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society, on TV and radio around the time of Michael Vick’s Dec. 10 sentencing.
The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge for bankrolling a dogfighting ring out of his Virginia mansion. Vick faces up to five years in prison.
