Dogs love to chase moving objects; it is part of their instinctive nature. That is why they chase cars, bikes and running children. What can you do if you are riding your bike and you come across a strange dog?
Dogs can run about 20 miles per hour (mph), dog-trainer Capt. Arthur Haggerty says. Can a child on a bike ride faster than that? Probably not.
Haggerty suggests that instead of trying to outride a strange dog, use the bike as a shield, keeping it between you and the dog. If the dog knocks you down, position the bike on top of you as protection.
