Get Busy!

Simple ways to housetrain your dog.

Routines vary from puppy to puppy, but up-and-out first thing in the a.m., after meals, naps and play sessions and every few hours during the day. Your pup needs to urinate and defecate on the last walk of the night if you hope to have a good night's sleep. In general, no water should be given to your pup after 7:00 p.m. unless it is the weather is hot.

Most puppies can be reliably housetrained by the age of 6 months but some take longer. Teach commands and reward your pup when it goes in the wanted areas to speed the housetraining process. As your pup squats to urinate say "hurry up" praise as the pup goes and reward with treat after it is done. Use "get busy" for defecation and again lavish praise and reward when the pup finishes the act. Most pups can be taught to relieve themselves on command.

I have a 4 month old yorkie (1.8 lbs). We have her gated in our laundry room. She does well during the night, however typically dirties during the daytime when we are not at home. Because of her size, our vet says we should keep food and water with her at all times (to avoid hypoglocemia). Is this the right thing to do? Also, we put peepee pads down, but she does not go on them- any suggestions appreciated.

I have a mixed Shi/Yorkier that is two. She was never properly house broken before I got her. No matter what I do with her, I just can't seem to get her housebroken. We have another dog that is older then her and she goes outside and does both of her jobs. Thought that would help house train the younger one. But nothing is working. Can let her out and she pees and comes in the house and poops. Getting really tired of cleaning up after her. Got any hints. She can't handle the heat, likes to be near ya all the time. She's my shadow.

I have aa Chinese Cresent that we rescued. He is the 4th dog we have gotten. He seems to pee on our bed pillows and poops in the closet, bathroom, where no one can see him. It has gooten so bad, that we create him doing the day. He then is put out, pees, but comes in and poops. How do we train aa older dog. All our dogs go out the doggie door. He does not get it, and we don't want to get rid of him.
