Ear Infection

A veterinarian can help you get your dog's ear infection under control.

When a dog's ear canals are irritated, they produce excessive amounts of wax and even pus. This material is usually dark brown and mucky looking. As a result, the dog's ears become sore and painful.

It is important to find out what is causing the irritation. Your veterinarian should examine a swab under the microscope to check for the presence of ear mites or white blood cells from an infection. The mites feed on the lining of the ear canal and are very irritating.

An otoscopic exam can identify the presence of inflammation in the canal, wax packed down by the eardrum or middle ear infection. Once the cause is determined, a specific treatment can be started. A cleaning solution is a good way to get rid of all the goop and debris. Then a specific medication can be used to treat the condition.
