Understanding Dog Aggression

Dogs become aggressive out of frustration and dominance.

Cesar Millan

Any breed can cause trouble but the bigger breeds can create bigger damage. This is where I find a lot of what I call my red-zone cases.

Its important to recognize the power of a strong breed like the pit bull, the Cane Corso and the Mastiffs. These dogs are very powerful and can destroy anything in an instant.

Remember that these dogs don't dream of being in the news when they grow up. Dogs don't premeditate bad acts like people do. Bad things happen when powerful breeds (or mixes of powerful breeds) live with humans who like the breed but don't understand the animal in the dog.

In a larger breed, frustration will intensify what the animal can do. Many people consider the look or popularity of a breed before thinking about whether the dog works for their lifestyle. This is a recipe for disaster.

Wanted: Leadership
To control a powerful breed you need to become the dogs pack leader and establish rules, boundaries and limitations. You need to fulfill the dog as Nature intended him to be fulfilled.

Dogs become aggressive out of frustration and dominance. The frustration comes from a lack of exercise and the dominance comes from a lack of calm, assertive leadership.

I work with owners of many red-zone dogs. First I work with the owners to establish them as pack leaders and to understand the animal in their dog.

I also explain to the owners the importance of exercise. Physical activity burns the dogs excess energy and maintains his healthy state of mind. This is important because in order to talk to the mind you need to remove the energy from the body.

If you live with an aggressive dog, I urge you to find a professional dog trainer to work with you and your dog. Many so-called aggressive dogs can be rehabilitated with time and dedication, and we owe it to our dogs to try.

This article is great but not very helpful for my very aggressive bull terrier of 7 months. He attacks my 8 year old daughter and bites me so often, I have many bruises. I'd like some major help with how to stop him because I've tried to be the pack leader and it doesn't seem to help.

We have a neighborhood dog that at one time played great with my dog. She got loose from there fenced in yard and was aggressive with my small dog, grabed his neck and shook him. This was very scarey and this has now happened two other times. The owners are seeking classes but are not taking this seriously. What should I do??

Cesar, I watch the show and read your articles. I find them helpful and informative. We saved our pet from being destroyed 2 yrs ago. He listens extremely well in the house, however on walks he continues to be a hunter and wants to pull the chain. Ideas? Thank you

I need help very badly I just before putting my 4yr old shih tuz either on medication or worse. I have 4 shih tuz and 3 males 1 female the older Male makes our household a pure hell day after day. I love all my babies but Lil Bobby is so aggressive to all the other dogs only when I am here. He can hear one of them come in the doggy door and he bows up hair standing on his back and starts shaking uncontrollably he goes after his victim with every intent to fight. I have gotten in between the fights and ended up with wounds on my legs that I had to have major treatment for. We have tried everything we can think of had him tested for everything. I truely think there is something very wrong with him, nothing works we have tried to be the Pack leader and he refuses to let that happen. One Vet told me to try tough love well come on what a joke. I am afraid that my husband will hurt him while trying to gain control of the situation. I am completely at my wits end, I know I can not give him away I don't think he would be able to handle that and I have even thought about having him put to sleep and just by writing down that thought makes me cry. Please help, I just want to have a calm home that I really want to come to at the end of each day but that is not the case now. I can not wait to go to work and don't want to come home from work. I watch you show all the time and have tried some of your technics to no avail. Help me please. I am sad and frustrated.
