At the 2012 National Dog Show, which aired on Thanksgiving Day, Wire Fox Terrier GCh. Afterall Painting the Sky (‘Sky’) took Best in Show out of more than 1,500 entries. This is the second year in a row that a Wire Fox Terrier took BIS, and her handler Gabriel Rangel of Rialto, Calif., has now won the National Dog Show three of the last four years with the Scottish Terrier Ch. Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot (‘Sadie’) in 2009, the Wire Fox Terrier Ch. Steele Your Heart (‘Eira’) in 2011 and now Sky in 2012.
"Sky is a very beautiful Wire Fox Terrier,” said Rangel. "She is a natural show dog with a short, well-balanced body. She has a beautiful head and her face is unbelievable.”
Best in Show judge Vicki Abbott added from the judge’s perspective, saying that Sky has "a keen expression and that dense, wiry coat. The handler let her show herself and she performed.”
The 4-year-old bitch was No. 1 in the breed and in the Terrier Group, and ranked No. 4 of all breeds going into the show. Sky is owned by Torie Steele of Malibu, Calif., and Victor Malzoni of Sao Paolo, Brazil. Steele also owns last year’s winner, Eira.
The Kennel Club of Philadelphia held two benched, all-breed dog shows on Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, Pa., just 15 miles outside of Philadelphia. The conformation competition that took place on Nov. 17 aired on Thanksgiving to an audience of 18 million after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Sky bested six other breeds, which took first in their respective groups. The Group 1st winners at the 2012 National Dog Show are:
Toy Group: Affenpinscher GCh. Banana Joe V. Tani Kazari
Working Group: Great Dane GCh. Lobato's Jitterbug Man
Sporting Group: Field Spaniel GCH. Sands Cape Pardon Me Boys
Hound Group: American Foxhound Ch. Kiarry’s Pandora’s Box
Non-Sporting Group: Tibetan Spaniel GCh. Kan Sing's Tenzin
Herding Group: Bearded Collie GCh. Dunhill Celebration
