Jim W. Smith was named the Breeder of the Year at the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

The 2012 AKC Breeder of the Year went to James W. Smith of North Collins, NY., at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Dec. 16, 2012, in Orlando, Fla. The Breeder of the Year award honors outstanding breeders who have dedicated their lives to breeding and improving the health and temperaments of purebred dogs. Each year the AKC chooses one breeder from each of the seven groups, and one breeder is selected as AKC Breeder of the Year at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

Smith, who received the award for his Absolutely Smooth Fox Terriers, will receive a commissioned canine portrait of a dog from his kennel. The portrait will remain on permanent display at AKC headquarters in New York City. James W. Smith has been a Delegate for the Dalmatian Club of America for 26 years and is the president of the American Fox Terrier Club. At Absolutely Smooth Fox Terriers, he has bred more than 50 champions, Best in Show dogs, national and regional specialty winners, and numerous group winners.

The breeders from the seven groups included:

Sporting Group: Dr. Dana Massey of Win’Weim Weimaraners, Valley Mills, TX

Hound Group: Alicia Hanna of Kimani Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Chester, N.J.

Working Group: Lynn Brady and Connie Townsend of Szumeria Kuvasz, Farmington, Minn.

Terrier Group: James W. Smith of Absolutely Smooth Fox Terriers, North Collins, N.Y.

Toy Group: Tammy and John Simon of Ta-Jon Maltese, Collinsville, TX

Non-Sporting Group: Krista Nuovo of Delamer Schipperkes, Middletown, N.Y.

In an AKC press release, Michael Canalizo, AKC’s Director of Event Management, said, "The American Kennel Club knows that the breeders of purebred dogs are the backbone of our sport, so we’re proud to honor them each year at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Being recognized as Breeder of the Year is one of the highest honors achievable.”
