What's this?
Distinctive facial markings called spectacles set apart this breed of Dutch origin and give it a look of great intelligence, a look that is borne out by the breed's alert, lively and trainable nature. The Keeshond (pronounced Case'hond) is a member of the spitz family of dogs and has been well known in the Netherlands since the mid-18th century, when it was known as the Dutch Barge Dog. It served as a companion and watchdog in villages and farms and on canal barges. The Kees was named for a political figure, the leader of the people's party, whose nickname was Kees. Thus the party mascot became "the dog of Kees," or Keeshond. This is an attractive, medium-size, sturdily made breed that ideally measures 17 to 18 inches at the shoulder, so it fits perfectly into a large apartment or small house. The abundant outer coat is straight and harsh, shaded gray with black tipping, with a thick mane covering the neck and a short, soft, close-lying undercoat. The hair on legs and feet is cream colored, smooth and short. The coat needs regular brushing and combing to keep it free of mats. Expect heavy seasonal shedding. The Keeshond is loyal, protective and excellent with children. It has a moderate activity level and will be content with a couple of short daily walks or playtimes.
