What's this?
Perhaps the first dog to result from a marketing campaign, the Leonberger was created in the 1840s to resemble the lion on the town crest of Leonberg, Germany. The Leonberger was developed from Saint Bernards, Great Pyrenees and Landseer Newfoundlands. Males are 28.5 to 31.5 inches tall at the shoulder; bitches, 25.5 to 29.5 inches. A Leonberger sports a dark mask, and its coat is golden lion to reddish-brown with black tips. It is long, medium-coarse and lies close to the body. Curly coats are disallowed. The Leonberger's characteristic mane should be in its glory by 3 years of age. The Leonberger is intelligent and easily trained. Nicknamed the gentle lion, it is calm and noted for its fondness of children. It possesses good watchdog abilities, and its webbed feet make it an excellent swimmer.
