The Middle Asian Shepherd Dog's original home was east of the Ural Mountains in Siberia and even Mongolia. There they have protected the flocks of nomadic tribesman for centuries. The best modern examples of the breed, however, can be found in some if the former republics of Russia such as Uzbek and Kazakhstan. They have never been exhibited outside of mid-Russia. Most are similar to the largest and most thick-set of the Caucasian dogs. They have lopped ears and bobbed tails. Some say the breed resembles the Tibetan Mastiff because of their thick neck folds and facial wrinkles. They come in a variety of colors, but black is most often seen. The breed is well-adapted to harsh and water-scarce conditions. The height is 23.5 to 25.5 inches minimum, but they are usually larger. The coat is short and thick, and black, white, gray or brindle; it may or may not have white markings.
