Honored as the national dog of Norway, the Norwegian Elkhound descends from spitz-type dogs that have been known in Scandinavia since Viking times (800-1000 AD). In its country of origin, the Elkhound has been used to pull sleds, tend flocks, guard home and family, and as a mountain rescue dog. This versatile dog has been used to hunt big game such as moose and bear, as well as smaller quarry, both fur and feather. The Elkhound is a compact, solidly built dog measuring about 20 inches at the shoulder, females slightly less. The coat is thick, abundant and weather-resistant in shades of gray with black tips. Thorough brushing about three times a week is the only grooming attention it requires. Although the breed adapts to city living, it is a rugged outdoor type that needs plenty of exercise and is at its best in the country. This breed makes an excellent family pet and guardian.
