Descendants of the pre-1900 Fox Terrier, Parson Russell Terriers are cyclones in dog form. Rev. John Russell of Devonshire, England, originally bred these extremely active and smart working terriers in the mid- to late-1800s. They are tough, determined terriers, relentless and fearless in pursuit of their prey. Parson Russells, formerly called Jack Russell Terriers by the American Kennel Club, measure between 12 and 14 inches at the withers. Body length is proportionate to height, presenting a compact, balanced image. The coat may be smooth, broken or rough, predominantly white, with tan, brown or black markings. The high-energy Parson Russell demands daily exercise and outdoor activity, and if it gets bored, this dog is quite capable of coming up with its own entertainment. Given sufficient exercise, it can be quite content to behave well inside a loving family home, making a loyal family companion.
(Editor's Note: As of April 1, 2003, the American Kennel Club changed the breed name from Jack Russell Terrier to Parson Russell Terrier.)
