Don't try to pronounce the name; just call this shaggy scenthound the PBGV. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has long been a popular hound in France, its country of origin. It is the smallest of four breeds of rough-coated French hounds. The PBGV is used chiefly to follow scent and drive game, which it does with keenness and enthusiasm in densest cover. However, because of its independent nature, this breed is worked in groups of four to six, not in large packs as is customary with many of the scent trailing hound breeds. The PBGV has also been used to rout out small vermin in the manner of working terriers. The breed is strong, powerful, compact and short-legged. The coat is rough and harsh with a soft dense undercoat that is predominantly white, and it may be marked with lemon, grizzle, orange or tricolor. PBGV are intelligent, lively and outgoing companions to the whole family. Although easy to train, the breed exerts its independence to the point of stubbornness at times, but those who know and love the breed wouldn't trade it for any other. This dog needs weekly brushing and thrives with lots of daily outdoor exercise.
