True to its herding breed heritage, The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is smart, trainable, alert to danger, and good with children. Also known as the Valee Sheepdog or the Polish Owczarek Nizinny, often called the PON for short, this ancient herding breed is probably descended from the Puli and the long-coated, medium-sized herding dogs of the Huns, and it's credited with being the ancestor of the Bearded Collie. The breed balanced on the edge of extinction after World War II but was rescued by Danuta Hrzniewicz, a Polish veterinarian. Dr. Hrzniewicz' unwavering devotion enabled her to rebuild the breed's foundation. This medium-size breed measures 17 to 20 inches at the shoulder and weighs from 30 to 50 pounds. The Polish Lowland Sheepdog has a long, shaggy coat, with a coarse topcoat and a woolly undercoat. It is considered a nonshedder, but requires brushing about three times a week. Its good nature makes the PON a fine family dog, as long as it has a leader to follow. It fits best into a home with a yard and enjoys plenty of daily exercise.
