Teach Your Dog to Play

Helpful tips to teach your dog to enjoy playing.

Jean M. Fogle

  • Pain and stiffness can hamper playfulness, so if your dog isn't playing as much as usual, schedule a visit to the veterinarian.

  • Make sure you really are enjoying the play yourself. If you are just going through the motions, your dog will know.

  • Add treats. Good-smelling tidbits can get your dog interested in fetch or tug objects.

  • For a small or medium-sized dog, get down on her level. Being on your hands and knees can make your motions look less threatening and more like play.
