Take Puppy Smarts 101:  Basic obedience classes are for those pups without prior training. It teaches the dog how to perform basic command responses, such as come, sit, stay, lie down, heel and walk on a leash.

The Gain: Puppies are ready to begin beginner's basic obedience classes when they have developed enough maturity to exhibit self-control: 6 months and older.

The Pain: Finding the right class for you and your pup can be tricky. "You will want to choose a class where you are comfortable with the trainer and his or her training methods," points out Scott.

Cost Factor: Fees can vary from $75 to $105 for a weekly one-hour long, six- to seven-week class.
