Are you a Dachshund person?

Find out if this friendly breed is for you.

Dachshund Puppy © Tara DarlingIf you have a friendly personality, you and your Dachshund will immediately have something in common. Having a lively mind will also be an advantage, for your Dachshund is an intelligent companion with a strong character. Your Dachshund is quite capable of running rings around you if you are not quick-witted enough to keep up with him!

You must make it clear to your dog that you are the boss, not him. You must never be unkind or harsh, but a commanding tone of voice will undoubtedly be an asset. You will need to train your dog to be obedient, and his training should start while he is still young. Additionally, hours of enjoyment will be spent watching your Dachshund clown around and, if you are willing to join in with his games, he will be that much happier.

The Dachshund is a small breed, and owners of all varieties find themselves fiercely devoted to the breed. It will be an advantage if you are fairly active, because as an adult your Dachshund will enjoy a good walk each day. Although small, he is energetic!

Note, however, that you will do your young puppy no favors if you exercise him for more than 20 minutes a day before he is about 6 months old.  A Dachshund allowed to become bored can be destructive around the home, not to mention noisy. If you are a house-proud person, or if you want to keep on good terms with your neighbors, or both, you will make sure that your Dachshund gets his exercise!

The house-proud owner will be interested to know that wirehairs do not shed coat around the home, but they will need to be stripped (a method of coat care done with a stripping knife or a well-trained thumb). This is quite an art if you want your dog to look his best. You may prefer to have a professional groomer do this or at least show you the correct way.

Because yours is a small dog, you don't need a particularly large home. If you live in an apartment, you will be glad to know that you can still thoroughly enjoy your lives together, provided you don't neglect to go out for regular walks. No Dachshund will benefit from living on the 44th floor of a city walk-up, so think elevator when you go apartment shopping.

I have 2 dachshunds-henry-black/tan/dapple mini-and piper a long red hair beauty. They have dachshunds character to a tee. Bold, stubbron, tenacious,DIGGERS,clowns, and most of all compasonate. I've owned many breeds in my live, but none have lived up to my doxies. Is is as though they feel what you feel, asways there to turn my frown upside down.

I have a 14 year old doxie and everything said about a doxie is not him. Yes, he loves everyone, he never met a person, child, or another dog he didn't like. He does not bark, just looks. He is not stubborn, but very smart. He has never chewed up anything since I got him at 6 weeks old. He is the perfect dog, no bad habits, not a digger. Why is he so wonderful and even though he is registered not have any of the doxie traits?

I know I just left a long comment, but after reading the comment from Heather in AR, I wanted to add. I too am on disability for depression and Jaeger, his name, has kept me from falling apart many a times. He knows when I'm down and knows exactly how to make me happy. He sounds exactly like Heather's dog. It's pretty obvious these dogs know alot more than us people. I really want to thank Heather for her comment, it made me feel real good. Thanks, Heather.

So much of what was said of the dachshund certainly isn't mine. I got him at 6 weeks and he grew up in the back office of my night club and now I'm on disability. So, we have actually been together 24-7 since day one. He is the friendliest guy in the world and never barks. He thinks everyone (young to old) is his best friend. He turned 14 in Jan. 2011 and although he has a heart condition, can still run fast on walks. He is the boss, not me, but when I look at him a certain way (he went deaf about 3 years ago), he knows to listen. He sleeps under the covers anywhere in the house. Dr. has only given him about 6 months to live and I don't think I can live without him. He's been my best friend for 14 years and we trust each other like no other.
