The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is not just a herding doghe is also a companion dog and he can be one of the best! In addition to his herding skills, he has been bred to be a loving and well-behaved companion with an even disposition. In the Herding Group, he finds himself with the other canines that have been bred to herd and tend sheep, goats and cattle. Of course, the Pembrokes size sets him apart from the other breeds in the group, as he is the smallest of all herding dogs. His primary job as a working dog is to nip at the heels of the cattle to keep them in line: to keep them in their pasture, return them to the barn or help the farmer take them to market. Thus his small size came in handy as he could nip at the cattles heels and then dodge out of the way of kicking hooves.
Before purchasing your Corgi, you must give some thought to the personality and characteristics of this dog to determine whether this is the breed for you. Even if not used for herding, the Pembroke will retain his breeds instincts. You must consider how these instincts will translate into a pet home.

1. Do you have the time to give to a dog? Your Pembroke will need care, companionship, training and grooming. Owning a dog is like having a child, except that the dog remains childlike in that he will always be totally dependent on you for his care.
2. Do you have a fenced-in yard for your Corgi? This is not a breed that you can leave tied out on the porch. Even though he is a small dog, he must have a secure area in which to run and exercise.
3. Will you be willing to work with your dog in basic obedience training? Are you prepared to see that he becomes a proper canine citizen with good manners?
4. Are you looking for a pet that will be a companion, that will live in the house with you and that will want to spend his waking hours with the family?
5. Have you owned a dog previously and did that dog live a long and happy life with you?
6. Do you have children at home and are you willing to teach and supervise them so that they will not mistreat their pet?
7. Will your neighbors be upset by a vocal dog? If your Pembrokes barking becomes excessive, are you willing to train your dog so that he will not be a nuisance?
8. Although this is a breed that will require little grooming, will you take the time to care for his basic grooming and hygiene needs?
