Although the Husky is a medium-size dog, standing about 24 inches tall, he requires big-dog accommodations. A large yard is best to provide adequate exercise space, and a secure fence at least 5 feet high is a must. Huskies are quintessential diggers and runners who are relentlessly determined to do both. If you fancy a manicured, landscaped yard, your Husky will soon make short work of it.
His natural proclivity to run is perhaps the Huskys most dangerous shortcoming. He runs for the pure pleasure of doing what he was bred to do, a trait that must be controlled for his own safety. The Husky does not perceive the possible danger of an oncoming snowmobile or truck. Siberians must be housed and exercised in safely and securely enclosed areas, always exercised on leash or harness, and never permitted to run free. Simply stated, Siberian owners who allow otherwise put their dogs in harms way and risk the loss of their dog to death or disappearance.
The Husky is best suited for an active family who pursues activities that include their dog. He needs at least one hour of vigorous exercise each day. Long, brisk walks, swimming and sled-pulling events are excellent outlets for that boundless Husky energy.
Husky rescue groups, comprised of volunteers who dedicate themselves to finding homes for abandoned Siberian Huskies, believe that many owners are unprepared for the breeds high energy level, devilish mischief and other hard-to-handle traits. Many Huskies are abandoned because of behavior problems, and rescue groups attempt to rehome many of those dogs every year.
If you fancy living with a Siberian Husky, patronize only a knowledgeable breeder who will educate you about both sides of this intriguing breed. A responsible, caring breeder will be happy counsel you during all of the stages of the dogs developmentand that's a good thing.
