This slender, elegant sighthound was used to course fox, hare and gazelle. Muslims considered it to be a sacred gift from Allah. One of the world's oldest breeds, Salukis were never sold but presented as gifts or tribute, and that's probably how they reached continental Europe. The breed was first imported to Britain in 1895 but did not create particular interest until after World War I, when a specialty club was organized. Males measure 23 to 28 inches at the shoulder, but females may be considerably smaller. The coat is smooth, soft and silky. It doesn't shed much and needs brushing only once a week. There are two varieties, one with feathering on the ears, thighs and tail; the other with no feathering at all. Color may be white, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle or tan, all with or without white; black and tan; or tricolor. A devoted pet for adults or gentle, older children, the Saluki has a catlike grace and will not tolerate roughhousing. The breed is a running hound and must have room to exercise in a large, safe, fenced area. The Saluki is not an apartment dog.
