Agile and light-footed, the Schapendoes is a mobile and speedy shepherd dog that gallops, rather than trots, and uses its long tail as a rudder when jumping. In fact, this intelligent, easily trained breed would be a marvel in agility events, or any other canine competition you prefer. A vigorous task or plentiful exercise is necessary to channel its zest for life, boundless energy and desire to work. Created in Holland during the early 1900s, this breed remains a working dog today and still exhibits the typical herder's traits of intelligence, independence and often territoriality. Along with many breeds, Shapendoezen nearly disappeared during World War II, however, a dedicated Dutch breed club, founded in 1947, helped repopulate the breed. The Shapendoes has lively brown eyes, if you can find them buried in its shaggy face, which is reminiscent of the Old English Sheepdog. Coat colors vary, but include black, grayish blue and gray, all with white. Thorough weekly brushing is required to keep the long, tousled, double coat untangled. This leanly muscled, medium-sized dog is usually 16 to 20 inches tall at the withers; weighing 33 to just under 40 pounds. Although it's a spirited breed, the happy Shapendoes can also be patient and calm, making it an enthusiastic playmate for children. It is quite affectionate and loyal with its family and loves retrieving and playing with its people.
