The Sloughi is a noble and proud member of the sighthound family. This dog's skill at hunting is as noted as its wonderful temperament. The nomadic tribes of the Ethiopian, Nubian and Egyptian deserts are the Sloughi's first known companions. The nomads used the Sloughi to hunt gazelles, hares and jackals. The dogs shared the hunter's tents and were revered by their owners. During the Middle Ages, the Sloughi made its way to northwest Africa when Arabs invaded those territories. Today, the Sloughi still inhabits the area. Males stand 26 to 30 inches at the shoulder; females are 22 to 28 inches. The lean, balanced body befits the Sloughi's athletic nature. The coat may be any solid shade of sand or fawn, with or without a black mask, brindle and black mantle. Weekly brushing keeps it soft and silky. Tricolors and coats with spots are not acceptable. Family members will receive loyal affection from their Sloughi, but strangers will be greeted with reserve. This alert breed makes a fine watchdog.
