Standard Schnauzer DOG PROFILE

The word schnauzer is German for "whiskered snout," which this breed surely has. This is the oldest and the original member of the Schnauzer family from which the other two sizes, the Giant and the Miniature, were developed. A native of Germany, the breed was used as a herder and an efficient farmyard ratter. It has been depicted in paintings dating to the 15th century. First introduced to this continent in the 1920s, the breed was originally classified as a terrier. Now it is a member of the AKC's Working Group, although it's a versatile breed that has been used as a personal guard, water retriever and flock guard. This is an active, robust dog. Males measure 18 to 20 inches at the shoulder, females 2 inches less. The double coat is hard and wiry, in either solid black or salt and pepper (gray), the latter with lighter markings on head, chest, legs and under tail. Hand stripping is needed to maintain correct coat texture and body outline; pets may be clipped. This should be done three to four times a year. Other than that, weekly grooming will keep the coat in shape. The Standard Schnauzer makes a fine family dog for the country or suburbs. It's strong, boisterous but biddable, and needs lots of daily outdoor exercise. Its highly developed senses, brains and fearless attitude make it a great watchdog, and its trainability makes it a good companion for children and adults.
