A rare breed developed in the United States, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is descended from English terriers and terrier mixes brought to America by immigrants. Breeds that likely had a part in the TRT’s creation include the Beagle, Bull Terrier, Italian Greyhound, Manchester Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Whippet, and the now-extinct white English Terrier. The dogs that resulted were used for ratting and were called Rat Terriers. Some were short-legged and some had long legs; the short-legged dogs were eventually named Teddy Roosevelt Terriers after President Teddy Roosevelt, who was rumored to have owned the breed. The TRT is an alert, active dog that needs plenty of human companionship to thrive. They get along with respectful kids, other dogs and even cats, and are lively and affectionate companions.
