You’ll notice something different about well-bred German Shepherd puppy ads compared to those of other dog breeds. A high number of ads tout German Shepherd dogs from European bloodlines or dogs directly imported from Germany. These well-bred dogs often come from parents with impressive working credentials, and a prospective dog owner can’t help but think that if an American German Shepherd is a fine dog, a German German Shepherd must be an even better dog.

Whether German German Shepherd Dogs are better depends on what you’re looking for in a dog. That’s one reason Ginny Altman, the health and genetics chairperson of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America, asks buyers about their lifestyles. “People with laid-back lifestyles might want a dog to keep them company while they watch TV,” Altman says. “These people might look at the American bloodlines for a dog who will not constantly challenge them. However, if the buyers are joggers, campers or always on the go, they might find a better match with dogs from European bloodlines. Dogs from European bloodlines tend to need a job and have a higher energy level.”

German German Shepherds imported from Europe tend to cost more than German Shepherds bred in the United States because of transportation costs. Plus, some of these German Shepherd Dogs are imported and sold by middlemen who make a profit. The cost for a typical well-bred German Shepherd in the United States depends on the dog breeder, the area in which the breeder lives and the demand.

“Prices vary greatly, but a well-bred champion GSD puppy with a full guarantee against elbow and hip dysplasia, or any congenital defect, will reasonably cost around $1,000,” Walker says.

A well-bred German Shepherd puppy will come from a breeder who is involved in the breed and has specific and far-reaching goals for improving his or her breeding stock. Those GSD puppies usually will have parents and/or grandparents who competed in and won AKC dog shows and have been certified by OFA.
