Pet food recalls can be scary and while it’s easy for pet owners to immediately panic, the most important thing you can do is have a plan. Continuing to feed your dog the food or waiting to take action because you are unsure of what to do, could cost your pet his life. Follow this guide if your dog food has been recalled or if your dog is showing signs of illness you believe are realted to his food.

IF YOUR FOOD IS ON THE RECALL LIST:

Stop feeding food immediately.

Save a small bag of the food in case the company or FDA needs samples

Save the barcode, label, and expiration date on bag if possible

Clean everything the food came into contact with

Feed your dog a brand with similar ingredients or contact your vet if your pet has special dietary constraints

As soon as possible, take your dog to the vet for a check-up, even if he is not exhibiting symptoms

Continue to watch for symptoms until the contained food is out of their system

Clean all dog food bowl and food containers by washing in hot water with soup and bleach

IF YOUR FOOD IS NOT RECALLED BUT YOUR DOG IS SHOWING SIGNS:

Immediately take your pet to your veterinarian

Report to FDA

Stop feeding food immediately

Save a small bag of the food in case the company or FDA needs samples

Save the barcode, label, and expiration date on bag if possible

Feed your dog according to your vet’s recommendation

Continue to watch for more symptoms

Clean all dog food bowl and food containers by washing in hot water with soup and bleach

While a recall can not be predicted or prevented, there are steps you can take to prepare for a recall and reduce the risk of being affected. Read the Dog Food Recall Preparedness Plan.
