From the Archives of Dog World: Enjoy this all-access pass to dog history from the pages of the longest published dog magazine. This content remains in its original form and reflects the language and views of its time. Health and behavior information evolves and only the most current advice should be followed.

The average Wire Haired Fox Terrier grows a show coat in 8 to 10 weeks from time of stripping. The body should be plucked this long before a show varying according to the season of the year and the individual dog. The upper part of the neck and shoulders should be done a few weeks later, tidy up the legs and quarters at the same time, skull, ears and under part of neck should be done about two weeks before the show. Use a blunt edged knife or the finger and thumb. Don’t use a razor or any sharp edged tool or your dog’s coat will have a cut down uneven appearance. A liberal application of ordinary powdered whitening helps to give a grip on the hair and cleans the dog. The time to have your dog looking his best is on the day of the show and trimming should be done to a regular schedule. A good Wire Haired Fox Terrier should not be fit to be seen for a few months before a show if he is to be at his best on the actual date. Never mind having him look good for casual visitor’s approval. The judge at the show won’t give you any ribbons because he looked fine six weeks before. His condition on The Day is what counts.

When showing, keep one eye on the judge and the other on your charge. Don’t carry on conversations with friends at the ringside; pay attention to the judge, he is the only individual that can give out the prizes, therefore keep your eye on him. Don’t hang your dog up by the head and don’t get him fighting and yapping with a mouth wide open. A daily drill with a few dainty bites as a reward for good conduct should be held previous to the show.

Have puppies treated with Anti-distemper vaccine 6 weeks before the first time. Any vet will do it at a small cost and it is good insurance.
