Natural Homemade Dog Treat Recipes
Homemade treats satisfy your dog’s cravings and your desire to feed her a healthy, natural diet.
Store-bought dog treats usually come in two varieties: canine junk food or expensive. Making dog treats at home allows you to control the ingredients, so you know they are good for your dog. These recipes don’t require you to roll out or cut out cookies, so they won’t take much time to make. They may not be as pretty or fancy looking as store-bought treats, but all your dog will care about is how delicious they taste.
Because these treats don’t contain preservatives, keep them in the refrigerator or freezer so they stay fresh. Bone-appétit!
Nutritious and economical beef heart makes these meaty little bar cookies irresistible to dogs. The egg shell adds calcium and the flax seed adds essential fatty acids.
- ½ pound beef heart, cut into cubes
- 1 egg including shell
- ¼ cup ground flax seed
- ¼ cup wholegrain flour, such as whole wheat, corn, or brown rice flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg yolk (Optional — if you have any left over from making Coconut Muttaroons, recipe below, this is a good way to use one of them)
Makes 36 treats
- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Put the beef heart in a food processor. Process until well chopped. Add egg and shell. Process until shell is pulverized. Add flax, flour and salt. Process until everything is well combined.
- Spray 8x8 or 9x9 square baking pan with cooking spray. Spread meat mixture evenly over the bottom. Optional: Brush with egg yolk.
- Bake for 1 hour. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Cut into 36 cubes. Cool completely.
- Remove cooled treats and store in the refrigerator up to one week, or in the freezer up to six months.
For this simple recipe, use up that last bit of egg whites in the carton, or save the yolks from whole eggs for later, such as for use in the Heart Snaps recipe, above. Only add the honey or molasses if your dog prefers sweet snacks.
- 2 egg whites or ¼ cup egg whites
- 1 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
- 1 teaspoon honey or molasses (Optional)
Makes about 24 treats
- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Put the egg whites in a clean bowl and beat with a whisk or an electric beater with whisk attachment until the white form soft peaks. Optionally, drizzle in the honey or molasses. Continue beating until whites form stiff peaks.
- Stir in coconut. Drop by teaspoons onto a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for about 20 minutes or until cookies are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and cool for 10 minutes. Carefully remove cookies onto a baking rack and cool completely. Store in the refrigerator up to one week, or in the freezer up to three months.
These meaty little bites are quick and easy to make with ingredients you probably already have lying around.
- ½ pound lean hamburger
- ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup any wholegrain flour, such as whole wheat, corn or brown rice flour
Makes about 24 treats
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. On a plate, combine cheese and flour.
- Using your hands, form the burger into small balls, about ¾-inch in diameter. Roll each ball in the cheese-flour mixture and place on a rimmed baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray.
- Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely. Store in the refrigerator up to four days, or in the freezer up to three months.
