Chanel, a 20-year-old wirehaired Dachshund from Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., will be listed as the world’s oldest known dog in the 2010 edition of “Guinness World Records,” owner Denice Shaughnessy told the Times Beacon Record (Smithtown, N.Y.).

“She’s pretty healthy,” Shaughnessy says. “Cataracts, a little, but OK.”

Chanel was born May 8, 1988, and adopted by Shaughnessy in Virginia six weeks later. Shaughnessy, a retired Army veteran, credits the military, which she says requires “meticulous” veterinary care for dogs living on military bases, as Shaughnessy and Chanel did for much of the 1990s.

Shaughnessy completed an online application and “lots of documentation,” including written statements from Chanel’s current veterinarian, to get Chanel listed in the “Guinness World Records” book.

Philip Zangara, DVM, from the Roosevelt Animal Hospital in Port Jefferson Station, has been Chanel’s veterinarian since 2002.

“She is an old dog, and an incredible dog,” Zangara says. “It’s amazing she can still walk.” However, he says, “she’s still got a head of steam when she comes in here.”

I am the proud owner of a Cairn terrior named "Lucky " who is 20 years old. He was born March 23, 1991! I am the lucky one!

Awww.. great story! I have a Dachshund/Jack Russell hybrid; she'll be 17 soon. Besides some cataracts, she's doing great. Seeing all these posts about 18 yr+ doxies made my day.

My son told me about this story. We have an 18 year old mixed breed Dachshund who is very healthy, spirited and spoiled. We wish Chanel a long life from Kirby, Baton Rouge, LA.

What a great article. Today is my dachshund's 18th birthday and I thought he was old. Unfortunately, he's almost blind, deaf and is exhibing some dementia but isn't in any pain and is still a great dog.
