In a newly published study, young children who were allergic to dogs and lived in homes with dogs had a lower risk for developing eczema than allergic children with no canine companions, WebMd reports.

Top Dogs Compete at Incredible Dog Challenge
Athletic dogs from the U.S., Japan, Poland and Canada are competing in the 2010 Purina Incredible Dog Challenge finals this weekend at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, Mo. The canine competition features a variety of “Olympic style” events including dog diving, freestyle flying disc, weave poles, Jack Russell hurdle racing and agility competitions. This marks the 13th year of the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, part of a multi-city tour that culminates each year with the championships.

Marines Want More Bomb-Sniffing Dogs
Marines in Afghanistan want to more than double the number of bomb-sniffing dogs at their disposal in the battle against record-setting attacks by insurgents using makeshift explosives. Marines in the heart of the Taliban stronghold in the southern part of the country have asked to boost the number of Labrador Retrievers from 300 to 647, USA Today reports.

Faulty Rabies Shots Given in Oklahoma
A man working out of retail store parking lots in southern Oklahoma may have charged hundreds of pet owners a fee to administer worthless rabies shots, a state official said Wednesday. The dogs and cats may be at risk for the viral disease because it's not known if a real vaccine was used or if it was stored properly. The animals are not considered vaccinated because state law requires the rabies vaccination be administered by a veterinarian or someone under the supervision of a veterinarian, The Oklahoman reports.
