Holiday pet adoption effort underwayIams Home 4 the Holidays, one of the world’s largest pet adoption programs, has a lofty goal this holiday season: to help find homes for more than 1.5 million animals despite the lingering recession.

"So far this year, we’re tracking at about the same pace of adoptions as we were last year and are dedicated to reaching our goal to find homes for 1.5 million animals by Jan. 4,” says Mike Arms, founder of the adoption drive and president of Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Last year, the program helped find homes for 1.4 million animals, up from 1.2 million in 2008.

More than 3,500 animal organizations worldwide participate in the program, founded by partner Helen Woodward Animal Center. Here’s how it works: Iams works with partnering organizations to ensure they have the tools to promote their organization and their pets. One tool Iams deploys is a detailed how-to guide that includes template materials, guides for event planning and tips for working within their communities. Iams also operates a toll-free phone number for organizations to call seven days a week for help and guidance with pet adoption needs.

This year, the company also pledged to provide 5 million bowls of food through the inaugural Bags 4 Bowls program. For every specially marked package of Iams cat or dog food purchased during the campaign that runs through Jan. 4, Iams will donate one bowl of food to a participating animal organization.

"Pet homelessness is an epidemic in our country and many animal organizations look to programs like Iams Home 4 the Holidays to help drive families to our centers to see these amazing animals,” Arms says. “We’ve been a part of the adoption drive for 12 years now and have really seen the benefit of what this program can do for animals, our employees and the families who adopt.”
