Two lost dogs that were found wandering the median of Route 60 in Illinois on Easter have been reunited with their owner.

The dogs of unidentified breeds were reported missing last week by their owners, who live in the town of Mettawa.

On Sunday, the cold, wet and hungry dogs were found outside Vernon Hills. An unidentified motorist stopped his vehicle and warned other drivers about the stray dogs, and then several good Samaritans gave the canines food and water.

Eventually, the dogs were handed over to the Lake County Sheriffs Department, which then took the dogs to an animal shelter near Wauconda, where they were eventually linked to their owners after the owners called the shelter looking for the dogs.

According to Leslie Piotrowski, community relations manager for the Lake County Health Department, the animal shelter, overseen by the health department, has an extensive program to find the owners of lost dogs.

However if the pets owners are not found for several days, then the dogs are turned over to local pet adoption agencies, Piotrowski told the News-Sun newspaper in Illinois.
