My maltese seemed perfectly healthy until we noticed his ears seemed infected. It turned out to be a yeast type of infection. After treating with antibiotic for 5 days, his hearing was dramatically diminished and he is almost deaf. After reading these comments, I'm convinced that is what happened to him. I stopped giving him vaccines many years ago. Thank goodness I have never had to board him.

My vet treated my dog with a steroid in her ear for recurring yeast infections. Shortly after, lost all her hearing she's only 9. My 10 year old dog is deaf too and has had treatments for ear infections. I wish I had done some research before just becoming at the mercy of the vet. Next dogs I have will go to a holistic vet. I have read that vinegar and natural products can clear yeast infections. I hate that my babies are deaf. So sad.

took my dog to vet for shots. He said ears were infected. He sedated her, put in a hot wax with steroid/antibiotics. Told me she would be hard of hearing first week until the wax drains out. bring her back for a f/u visit 2 weeks. Returned, said still some redness. wax again. So after 4 bouts of hot wax, involving 3 sedations, I took her back today as she is not hearing well at all. Asked vet if there could still be some wax in there.? She didn't get her hearing back since last visit/wax 3 weeks
ago.
He is going to check her further today, no more hot wax. Said he hoped her ear condition didn't cause damage to the structure of the ear. How do I say she was hearing awesome until the wax treatments began? She never had one infection in her previous 7 years of age.

I don't believe it was the antibiotic. I think it was the Bordatello vaccine. We vaccinated our 11 year old Doberman because we found a good kennel for when we occasionally needed to be away a couple of days. We had the same experience..our dog suddenly went deaf and began to experience signs of Wobblers type symptoms. She has gone downhill ever since that vaccination. If bordatello disease can cause deafness, then the vaccine can too. It's been sad to see her go from being perfectly healthy to very soon, we will have to put her down...all in less than 6 months.

My Sheltie of age 12 was diagnosed with double ear infections, I was sent home with instructions to flush her ears once a day and add ear drops called mometamax. By the second day I noticed she was not responding when called or being greeted. I took her back and they said this can happen but very rare, she had has an ear infection once in her life back in 2007. They said she may gain her hearing back but to date she has not. I know dogs with cope with changes since I know several blind dogs but there should be some kind of warning.

I took my 10 year old best frend to the vet for a check up. Vet said she had an ear infection and treated her with thick antibiotic ointment vet claimed would be absorbed. When I got my friend home she could not hear. After three weeks and three visits back vet is at a loss to reason for the hearing loss. To date Charlie still can not hear. She has never before been treated for an ear infection! Has anyones' pet over come a hearing loss?

I have a 5 year old boxer who has had an ear infection off and on since a pup, always in the left ear. She now has an infection in the ear, parlized on the left side of head because of this she was unable to blink the left eye and has a haze over the left eye. I took her to an Animail Eye Clinic, she is now using her inner or third eye lid to blink the eye looks much better. I have had her on a number of medication and drops for the ear. I would like to give her some relief. I am now giving her 1/2 tablet twice a day of Rimadyl for the inflammation.

I took my 10-year-old dog to the Vet on Tuesday after she had two accidents inside (I suspected UTI). Her Bordetella vaccine was updated and she was prescribed 500mg Ciprofloxacin (similar to Zeniquin), 1/2 tablet twice a day or 1 tablet once a day, and I gave her one tablet on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I thought she was just sleeping soundly on Friday when I came home, but after getting home late on Saturday night, I noticed I startled her when I turned the light on because she can't hear anything at all. The Emergency Vet said she has been practicing for 30 years and has never heard of this antibiotic causing deafness, but the timing just seems odd to me.

Recently, my 14 year old boxer was diagnosed with double ear infections, the vet said she had both a bacterial and a yeast infection in one ear for sure, possibly both ears. She was on ear drops and she started acting like she was in more pain the longer we continued with the drops. Now sshe seems to be completely deaf. She has some mild hearing loss prior to this. I spoke with the vet and he had me discontinue medication. But so far her hearing has not come back. She has had some personality changes also, but I think that is due to her not being able to hear now. Very sad!

My 11 year old cockapoo, who is blind, had a bad mollar in her mouth removed (under anesthesia) and ended up deaf. The vet is at a loss for a reason. He contacted the drug companies to see if the anti-inflamatory he gave her could have caused it but they have no reported cases. I am desperate for an answer and a cure. Anyone??

I am looking for answers because the same thing recently happened with my Scottish Terrier. She had a severe ear infection with lots of oozing. We took her in, they sedated her and filled her ear canals with a waxy substance meant to heal the infection. She has been deaf ever since. About three weeks after the procedure she became very imbalanced, unable to walk straight, or go up or down the stairs. She has been lethargic and has a decreased appetite. Her ears are still very swollen and sore. She has been on antibiotics and steroids for weeks, but not a lot has changed. We are at a loss as to what to do next. Frankly, so is the vet.

my dog has a very bad cause of a ear infection. He may have ruptured his eardrum, they dont know yet cause they cant get a scope in his ear cause of the swelling. The doctor gave us Malotic Ointment, Zeniquin, and predisone. Does anyone know if these medications are ok? Any side affects? My dog is 10 years old. He has never had any proproblems before. He seems like he cant hear me. Is this from the ear infection? Any suggestions?

DO NOT USE THIS MEDICATION!! My dog is now deaf and disoriented. Had perfectly normal hearing and balance prior. The sad thing is that he is also blind so now I have a dog who is having a VERY difficult life and is very sad. I was NEVER warned of this side effect and blame myself for placing 100% trust in my vet and not doing research first. The only thing I have left is prayer. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!

My dog went deaf after a surgery to remove a tumor. The dog was exposed to an anesthetic and then Traumadol and ciproflocsacin (forgive my spelling). I suspect it was the anesthetic, it was an injectible anesthetic not a gas or pill. Perhaps your dogs had an injectible anesthetic during the procedures you describe? I don't know what made my dog go deaf, but she is deaf as a post now; She's a happy deaf dog at least.

My 11 year old peekapoo was prescribed Mometamax. I only used it on her for 2 days and she is now DEAF! The Vet told me there were no side affects, but the warning on the insert in the box (which I have failed to read) said it can cause old dogs to go deaf. I don't know if this is going to be permanent. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS MEDICATION!

DON'T USE MOMETAMAX AND FIND OUT IF THAT WAS USED ON YOUR PET. THE VET PRESCRIBED FOR MY PET FOR EAR INFECTION. I USED IT FOR 2 WEEK AS PRESCRIBED AND NOW HAS BEEN 2 WEEKS SINCE I STOPPED USING IT AND SHE IS TOTALLY DEAF!!! HER HEARING WAS FINE BEFORE THE MEDICINE, AND NOW I READ THAT IT CAN CAUSE HEARING LOSS. WELL, IT HAS AND IF I HAD KNOWN THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY THAT MY PET WOULD BE DEAF, I WOULD HAVE INSISTED ON A DIFFERENT MEDICATION. IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET, DON'T TAKE THE CHANCE AND USE THIS MEDICATION, BECAUSE THERE ARE OTHER MEDS YOU CAN USE. IF THIS IS THE MEDICATION YOUR PET WAS GIVEN, I AM NOT SURPRISED HE CANNOT HEAR.

Hello. I have a 10-year-old cocker with her share of ear infections through the years. Typically treated successfully with Mometamax and antibiotics. This last infection in her left ear didn't clear up and was quite swollen so the vet recommended going under anethesia and having her ears flushed. We did this five days ago and she has been completely deaf since the proceedure, even in the right ear that wasn't at all infected but it was flushed along with the other ear. We stopped Mometamax since we read it can cause hearing loss in small/old dogs. The vet doesn't know why or have any solutions for us whatsoever. He said her eardrums were perfectly fine before the flushing so shouldn't have been irritated by the flush. Help.
