The Beauceron is nicknamed "red stockings" because of the socklike red markings on its feet. Relatively unknown outside of France, the Beauceron (Berger de Beauce) is a large, short-coated dog with cropped erect ears and a long tail that was originally bred to herd large flocks of sheep. Today the breed is still used as a farmer's dog as well as in police work. The height for the breed is 24.75 to 27.5 inches. Acceptable colors for this handsome dog include bicolor (black with red markings) and tricolor (black and gray with red markings). The Beauceron's distinguishing characteristic is its double hind dewclaws. The Beauceron is highly intelligent, easily trained and obedient. While not aggressive, Beaucerons are noted for their excellent memories and are protective of their property and people, especially children. The breed is sturdy and adapts well to various climates. If you can give this dog an outlet for its energy and can provide firm but not harsh discipline, you will command the Beauceron's respect and enjoy its sensitivity, loyalty and patience.
