The history of the Black Mouth Cur is shrouded in mystery. Some claim that the breed originated in the Tennessee mountains; others maintain that it hails from Mississippi. Southern geography notwithstanding, early Americans used them widely as versatile working dogs. As Americans moved West, the dogs moved with them, proving their worth as hunters and family guardians. The Black Mouth Cur hunts squirrel, coon, boar or bear, and never retreats. The breed works stock well, too. Breeders claim the puppies train themselves – treeing, protecting and penning cattle by 6 months of age. The breed is used throughout the southern area of the United States. The Black Mouth Cur finds game using its eyes, ears and nose.
