Bolognese DOG PROFILE

Named for the northern Italian city of Bologna, the Bolognese was once a favorite of nobility and the ladies-in-waiting of many European courts. Records show the existence of the Bolognese since the year 1200. Known also as the Bichon Bolognese, its ancestry probably goes back to Bichon types imported from southern Italy and Malta. Despite its once favored status, the Bolognese is now rare and little known even in its homeland. Bolognese measure from 10-12 inches at the shoulder weighing 9 to 13 pounds. The coat is long, soft, tufty hair without an undercoat. Although solid white is the preferred color, some blond markings are allowed. Aside from a daily brushing to keep the coat free of tangles, they are easy to care for, healthy companions. These dogs become very attached to their owners, often following their loved one from room to room, and need the presence and attention of their families. Keen eyesight and hearing combined with a vivacious fearless nature make the Bolognese a capable watchdog.
