Boykin Spaniel DOG PROFILE

This medium-size dog is a sturdy and typical spaniel, bred to be a hunting dog with exceptional retrieving and flushing abilities. He is adept at both land and water retrieving, not shy to jump in the lake to pick up his prize. Developed in the early 1900s in the Carolinas for hunting wild turkeys in the Wateree River Swap, the Boykin has lots of energy and enthusiasm. As a family pet, the Boykin Spaniel’s need to please makes him easy to train and a joy to be around. Although he may not get along that well with other dogs or people he does not know, he loves to be around “his people.” This little dog with the deep liver-brown coat has the flop ears that are unmistakable on a spaniel. Larger than a Cocker, the Boykin Spaniel doesn’t possess the super fancy coat of the Cocker, either, but he’s just as pretty! Did you know: The Boykin Spaniel is the official state dog of South Carolina, and the Boykin Spaniel Society was founded in the summer of 1977. .
