Named for an Inuit tribe, the Mahlemut, this breed is a powerful member of the spitz family of dogs. The Alaskan Malamute has been used to track large game and as a pack and sled dog able to transport heavy loads over rough terrain. In Inuit villages, the Malamute doubled as a family pet and guard dog, even, serving as a nanny to children at times.
