Bulldogs

As British as the Union Jack, the Bulldog was formerly exploited in the now-outlawed sports of bull baiting and pit fighting. Fortunately for the breed, when humane laws forbidding these activities came into effect in 1835, people who admired the breed made it their business to preserve and protect these dogs, which had become symbols of courage and tenacity. Today's Bulldogs have had the aggressiveness bred out of them. The modern Bulldog is gentle, intelligent, affectionate, strong and determined. Young Bulldogs are moderately active, enjoying short daily walks and playtime, and they take well to training. At least one Bulldog has learned to skateboard. Bulldogs, which weigh 40 to 50 pounds at maturity, can adjust to almost any environment. They have lovable personalities, but tend to drool and snuffle. They suffer from heat and need special care during the summer. The short, fine coat sheds heavily but is easy to care for, requiring only a weekly brushing. The breed isn't usually a barker, but they are good watchdogs whose appearance is often enough to discourage strangers from approaching. Bulldogs are calm and sedate around the home and are willing playmates for children.
