What's this?
Whippets are the Porsches of the dog world, elegant sighthounds with clean, swift lines and powerful engines. They were developed in the north of England about 200 years ago, from crosses between small English Greyhounds and various terrier breeds. An infusion of Italian Greyhound improved type. The breed became popular as a coursing hound, used first on rabbit, later on artificial lures. Known as the working man's racehorse, the breed was introduced to North America by Lancashire textile workers who came to work in the New England mills. Their dogs participated in lure coursing and flat racing events, sports that have enjoyed increasing popularity. The breed is an easily tended family pet that adapts to most accommodations. The Whippet is slender and hardy with a fine, shorthaired coat that may be any color or combination of colors. Males measure 19 to 22 inches at the shoulder, females 1 inch less. Weight in the vicinity of 28 pounds. Gentle weekly brushing is all the grooming this dog requires. The quiet but alert Whippet is an excellent watchdog that will enjoy a daily walk and a good run in a safely enclosed area.
(Editor's Note: According to the American Kennel Club breed standard, any coat other than a short, close, smooth and firm one, such as a long-haired coat, will be disqualified from the AKC show ring.)
