Boykin Spaniel
By
Cherie Langlois
DID YOU KNOW?
n This breed probably descended from a stray, spaniel-like dog found during the early 1900s in Spartanburg, S.C.
n The breed name comes from Whit Boykin, a sportsman who trained a former stray named Dumpy to help create a retrieving dog compact enough to ride in boats.
n The Boykin Spaniel is South Carolina’s state dog.
n These smart, friendly dogs love to be part of the family.
GOOD TO KNOW
“Boykins are friendly dogs, and they make wonderful pets and companions — they just want to please. They’re very, very good all-around hunting dogs.”
James Latimer of St. Matthews, S.C., is chairman of the Boykin Spaniel Society.
