English Cocker Spaniel

This affectionate breed is a merry companion.
By Wendy Bedwell-Wilson

Two continents, two breeds
The English Cocker Spaniel owes his distinction to Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, the breed’s godmother. In the 1930s and 1940s, when dog showing became the great American pastime of the aristocracy, Dodge took a keen interest in the breed. The heir to the Standard Oil fortune and groundbreaking dog-show figure sought to dispel the myth that the English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel were mere varieties of a single breed, says Kerrin Winter-Churchill, a breeder and owner of champion English Cockers based in Ohio.
