Visit my house at the start of summer, and you’ll encounter a flurry of activity: dog beds being washed, carpets being vacuumed and cleaned, dogs being scrubbed from head to paw. No, my husband and I aren’t expecting a swarm of guests (not the human kind, anyway). We’re ramping up to combat flea season, and the horrible hot spots that often follow.
For several years before we started our annual top-down cleaning ritual and became practically fanatical about flea prevention medication for our dogs, our Labrador Retriever, Piper, would — without fail — get nasty hot spots come August. The poor dog would bite and lick at the flame-red spots till they were hairless and oozing.
