History in the Making
The AKC celebrates its 125th year by giving the public something to howl about.
Anniversaries of substantial length are typically given a symbolic designation. Silver for 25 years, gold for 50. When United States citizens turn 100, they traditionally receive a letter from the president.
But what about 125 years? Is there even a title for such a milestone? The founders of the American Kennel Club likely never expected their organization to develop in the ways it has over the last century and a quarter. In 1884, a group of dog enthusiasts came together to form the AKC to promote responsible dog ownership, improve canine health, and advocate for purebred dogs as family companions.
Fast forward to 2009 and their initial efforts continue to evolve.
